Sowing in benefit of the Bonelli's Eagle in Crete
Up to date, 170 kg of coated seeds and 70 kg of seedballs have been produced by the Natural History Museum - University of Crete) in collaboration with the Social Cooperative Enterprise (SCE) “Melitakes”. The former have been broadcasted in 4 locations (total area ca. 30 acres) at the project area of Asterousia in south Heraklion). All seeding sites are located in the vicinity of Bonelli’s eagles’ nests that were active during the previous breeding season (2019).
Seed germination is currently considered satisfactory. The aim of the action is to increase the available food for Chukar Partridge, rabbits and other prey-species for the Bonelli’s Eagle as well as other raptors in the area.
Similar sowing activities will follow in other areas of Crete too, as part of the LIFE Bonelli EastMed Project, for the benefit of the island's biodiversity.
